Scholarship Scheme 2012/13

St Mary’s University College is offering the following scholarships, to be awarded as fee waivers, to students beginning a course of Study at St Mary’s in September 2012.  A copy of the St Mary’s Scholarship Scheme Policy 2012/13 can be downloaded (available from 15th February 2012). 

Please note that the criteria for each scholarship are awaiting approval and may be subject to change.  Due to government guidelines, it is unlikely that St Mary’s will be able to offer any of the following scholarships to students who will be enrolling on an undergraduate teacher training course in September 2012.

National Scholarship Programme Awards

The National Scholarship Programme is a government backed scheme to provide students from disadvantaged backgrounds help with the cost of attending university 

St Mary’s will be offering 86 scholarships of £3,000 to students from families with a household income of under £25,000, and who can meet the additional criteria.

Successful applicants will be awarded one of following:

  • £3,000 as either a tuition fee (50 awards) or accommodation fee waiver (36 awards) in Year 1
  • £2,000 tuition fee waiver in Year 2
  • £1,000 tuition fee waiver in Year 3 (and in Year 4 of a 4 year course)

Successful applicants studying on a part-time course will receive a fee waiver pro-rata to the full fee liability of £8,000 e.g. students studying 50% of an undergraduate degree with a tuition fee liability of £4,000 would be eligible for 50% of the tuition fee waiver.  

Criteria

To be eligible to apply for a scholarship students must:

  • have a household income below £25,000, and
  • have been offered a place on a full-time or part-time (minimum intensity of 25% of full-time degree) undergraduate degree course or foundation degree course, and
  • be resident in England or the EU (with the exception of students who are ordinarily resident in Scotland, Wales & Northern Ireland
  • have completed an Application for Student Support through Student Finance England or the Student Finance European Team (EU students) and agree that your financial information can be shared with St Mary’s University College, and
  • be entrants new to higher education in 2012, and
  • not in receipt of full or part payment of fees through a sponsorship arrangement

In addition, student applicants must fulfil one or more of the following criteria:

  • be a student who has completed an Access course in 2011/12
  • be a student with a disability in receipt of a Disability Living Allowance
  • be a looked-after child/care leaver, or receiving support from the Foyer Federation, and 21 or under at the start of the academic year 2012/13
  • hold Refugee status
  • neither parent holds a degree at higher education level
  • be studying in 2011/12 in a school/college in one of the London Boroughs
  • make/have made St Mary’s University College a firm choice
  • register on an undergraduate/foundation degree course at St Mary’s University College in September 2012

An application form can be downloaded (available from 13th February 2012).  Forms must be completed and returned with the required evidence to the Scholarships Office at St Mary’s University College.

The initial closing date will be: Friday, 20th April 2012

Academic Excellence Scholarships

Up to 30 Scholarships will be given as tuition fee waivers to UK students who have achieved at least AAB at ‘A’ level or equivalent and:

  • have a household income of less than £42,600
  • have completed a means-tested assessment through the appropriate awarding authority (Student Finance England/Student Finance Wales/Student Finance NI/Student Awards Agency for Scotland) and agree that your financial information can be shared with St Mary’s University College, and
  • make/have made St Mary’s University College a firm choice, and
  • register on a full-time undergraduate/foundation degree programme at St Mary’s University College in September 2012

Successful applicants will receive tuition fee waivers of:

  • £4,000 in Year 1
  • £2,000 in Year 2
  • £1,000 in Year 3
  • £1,000 in Year 4 of a 4 year degree course

You will need to achieve at least 60% when progressing from one year to another to remain eligible..

If the number of applications exceeds 30, these scholarships will be awarded to students who have the lowest assessed household income at the time of allocating the Scholarships.

Care Leavers’ Scholarships

Up to 30 scholarships of £1,000 will be given as tuition fee waivers, in the first year of study only, to Care Leavers who:

  • are ‘looked after’ by a Local Authority, or receiving support from the Foyer Federation
  • are 21 years of age or under at the start of the academic year 2012/13
  • make/have made St Mary’s University College a firm choice
  • register on a full-time undergraduate/foundation degree programme at St Mary’s University College in September 2012

An application form can be downloaded (available from 13th February 2012).  Forms must be completed and returned with the required evidence to the Scholarships Office at St Mary’s University College.

Catholic School Scholarships

Up to 60 Scholarships of £1,000 will be given as tuition fee waivers to students who are studying at a Catholic School or College in the UK in the 2011/12 academic year and who:

    • have a household income of less than £42,600
    • have completed a means-tested assessment through the appropriate awarding authority (Student Finance England/Student Finance Wales/Student Finance NI/Scottish Awards Agency for Scotland) and agree that your financial information can be shared with St Mary’s University College, and
    • make/have made St Mary’s University College a firm choice
    • register on a full-time undergraduate/foundation degree programme at St Mary’s University College in September 2012

    and

    • neither parent holds a degree at higher education level,

    or

    • be a looked-after child/care leaver, or receiving support from the Foyer Federation, and 21 or under at the start of the academic year 2012/13

    This tuition fee waiver is paid in the first year of study only.

    Elite Sports Scholarships

    At least 20 scholarships of up to £1,000 will be given as tuition fee waivers to elite sports students in the first year of study only.   To be eligible students must:

    • have reached junior international level or the equivalent at their chosen sport prior to joining St Mary’s
    • make/have made St Mary’s University College a firm choice
    • register on a full-time undergraduate/foundation degree course at St Mary’s University College in September 2012

    An application pack can be downloaded (available from 13th February 2012).  Forms must be completed and returned with two signed references, plus any evidence, to the Scholarships Office at St Mary’s University College

    The closing date for applications will be:  Friday, 20th April 2012
