Part-time Primary PGCE study route (15 Months)

Our part-time Primary PGCE teacher training route commences on 30th August 2024, with assessed school placements being full-time.

The part-time programme is four terms, starting in August 2024 and finishing in December 2025. It is taught at St Mary's on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays during term time, providing you with the flexibility to balance your journey to becoming a teacher with the demands of your career and home.

The majority of lectures take place from 9am to 4pm. The first foundation school experience placement follows the same pattern as the full-time cohort in the autumn term of 2024, with subsequent placements taking place separate from the full-time cohort. The second development school experience placement is in the summer term of 2025 and the final consolidation placement in the autumn term of 2025.

FAQs: part-time PGCE

What is a typical day at the University?

Typically a day at St Mary's will be a combination of small group working, lectures, and seminars. The day usually starts at 9am and ends at 4pm, however, timetabled sessions will also take place in the afternoons. Further details will be available as soon as possible, but you should expect to attend university until 4pm. Timetables will be given to you in advance.

Throughout the part-time teacher training course, there will be periods of self-directed study where you are encouraged to research a topic, complete online learning materials, and meet in pairs or groups to prepare an assessment or presentation.

Do I have to find my own school placements?

Not at all - the School Partnership Office will arrange the school placements you complete during the course.

Please note: school placements are full-time and the dates will be given to you in advance.

I have not studied for a while – will I get help and support during the course?

Absolutely! You will have a designated Personal Tutor and staff will provide academic and professional support throughout your studies. In addition, there are learning support strategies available for students with disabilities.

What are the entry requirements?

Course entry requirements are the same as the Primary Generalist programme and students should refer to this.

How much does the course cost? Is there any financial help?

Tuition fees for the programme can be found on the Primary Generalist webpage. Part-time students will pay in two even installments in April and September.

You will likely be eligible to apply to Student Finance England for a Tuition Fee Loan. We have a Student Finance Officer who can provide more support and advice on this important matter.

What are the job prospects for a Newly Qualified Teacher?

Excellent - over 98% of graduates were employed within six months. The PGCE Primary programme at St Mary’s gives students the skills and experience necessary to succeed as a primary teacher.
