Cultural history including: identity formation, especially that of communities living in extra-European politically and culturally liminal areas:

• Cultural history including: identity formation, especially that of communities living in extra-European politically and culturally liminal areas
• Ottoman (and Islamic) warfare, specifically the study of the rhetoric of conflict and representations of war
• Muslim-Christian interactions throughout the Mediterranean, and Indian Ocean areas
• audience-centred models of reading and literacy practices in an Ottoman and Islamic manuscript context 
• European narratives of the Ottoman Empire and Islamic world
• issues concerning epistemology and meaning as they relate to the conception of the past and the writing of history
• Ottoman and Islamic theories of history
• the impact that nation-state dominated cartographies and national myths have on the narration of the past.
