Irish Studies

A fresh perspective on the history and culture of a fascinating island. On a visit to the campus by the President of Ireland, Mary McAleese, described the Centre for Irish Studies at St Mary’s as ‘an acknowledged leader in the field of Irish Studies’.

Caroline ReganCaroline Regan
Educated at St James RC High School, Colindale, North London and in Ballaghadereen, Co Roscommon. Attracted to St Mary's and Irish Studies by its compact campus and friendly atmoshere, her favourite Irish Studies modules were Irish History and the Irish Language, with the annual field trip being an added attraction.

An accomplished traditional musician, Caroline founded the Irish Music Society at St Mary's and intends to be a music therapist afer graduation.

Frances Harkin
Frances HarkinEducated at John F Kennedy RC School, Hemel Hempstead, Frances was attracted to St Mary's by its good teaching reputation and its vibrant social atmosphere which enabled her to "get to know everyone quickly and easily". She was a leading light of St Mary's Ladies Gaelic Football Team.
 
Her favourite Irish Studies module was Telling the Troubles and, as a result of her involvement with Irish Studies at St Mary's, Frances is studying for an MA in Irish Studies at Queen's University, Belfast. 
 
Kerry McGowanKerry McGowan
Educated at Ursuline High School, Wimbledon, Kerry originally came to St Mary's intending to become a teacher. After transferring to Irish Studies and English however, she is embarking upon a Law Conversion Course in order to become a solicitor. The main attraction of Irish Studies for Kerry was the small and friendly classes. She particularly liked the Telling the Troubles module.
 
Kerry is an accomplished Irish traditional musician and was an active member of St Mary's Irish Music Society.
 
 
Eileen O'Sullivan
Eileen O'SullivanEducated at St Joan of Arc School, Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire, Eileen chose Irish Studies on the recommendation of a friend who had just graduated in the subject from St Mary's. She reckons it was one of the best decisions she has ever made and describes her time here as "academically stimulating as well as good fun!"
 
Eileen studied Irish Studies and English and her favourite Irish Studies module was Media and Popular Culture in Ireland. She intends to become a primary school teacher.
