Philosophy asks questions about what lies behind our everyday existence. Philosophers find employment in a wide variety of jobs, where their analytical and critical thinking skills are highly appreciated.

The Philosophy Programme offers its students a broad overview of philosophical ideas, as well as the opportunity to engage with some of these in more detail. Philosophers consider questions which are at the heart of our understanding of the world, and of our place within the world: what is real, what is good and what is evil, do we have free will, how does language shape our thinking? These questions are as old as humanity itself. Philosophy at St Mary’s is studied with a unique context and emphasis. It has in particular a strong background in ethics.

Studying philosophy will enable you to develop skills of independent and critical thought. It engages with issues and questions of contemporary culture and debate. It also introduces you to traditions of thought and reflection in a variety of cultures and time periods.
