St Mary’s Athletes Help Secure Podium Positions for Great Britain

Athletes at St Mary’s University College, Twickenham help secure podium positions for GB in the European Athletics Team Championships and World Rowing Cup

It was a great weekend for sport this Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd June after athletes from St Mary’s University College, Twickenham helped secure podium positions for Great Britain. The fourth European Athletics Team Championships took place in Gateshead and saw more than 600 athletes from 12 countries compete in 20 different track and field events. Four athletes associated with St Mary’s Endurance Performance and Coaching Centre (EPACC) contributed to team GB securing third position, narrowly behind Russia in first and Germany on second. Former student and EPACC runner Mo Farah came first in the men’s 5,000m event with a time of 14.10.00. In the women’s 5,000m race EPACC athlete Emelia Gorecka took second place after finishing with a time of 15.40.52. St Mary’s alumnus Andrew Osagie secured third place in the 800m event after running a time of 1:47.41, whilst fellow alumnus Charlie Grice ran the men’s 1,500m in 3:39.76, securing him second place. The 3,000m steeplechase saw Lennie Waite take fifth place in 9:56.19 and Rob Mullett came in 11th place in the men’s event after sustaining an injury. Current student Zane Duquemin secured 9th position in the men’s shotput after throwing 18.50m. Meanwhile, the 2013 World Rowing Cup II took place at Eton Dorney where former student and Olympic Bronze medallist Moe Sbihi secured Gold for Team GB in the men’s eight event.
