The Centre for the Social Scientific Study of the Bible at St Mary’s University College, Twickenham is hosting a special guest lecture from Dr Susanne Luther, Research Associate from Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz. Taking place on Tuesday 15th October, the lecture, entitled “The Ethics of Speech: Answers from the New Testament,” will give a cutting-edge perspective on ethical paradigms and moral advice concerning speech in interpersonal relationships, including the anthropological and theological consequences. The talk will delve deeper into the New Testament writings , in particular James, Matthew, 1 Peter and the Pastoral Epistles, in order to reveal a distinctive interest in the transmission of speech-ethical topics in explicit and implicit form. Using discourse analysis as the methodological approach, Dr Luther’s study is interested in the early Christian discourse of speech-ethics, analysing the application of the ethical norms in the diction and narration of the canonical New Testament writings, and focusing on the effects of speech. Prof Chris Keith, Director of the Centre for the Social-Scientific Study of the Bible at St Mary’s University College, said, “We are extremely fortunate to have Dr. Luther here at St Mary’s.  This promises to be an exciting and informative lecture.” The event will take place from 5-7pm in the Waldegrave Drawing Room and is free and open to the public.
