Drama St Mary’s Retells The Sandman in new Production

Postgraduate Drama students at St Mary’s University College, Twickenham are set to tell the tale of a village engulfed by darkness in a new production

This December, postgraduate Drama students at St Mary’s University College, Twickenham are set to tell the tale of a village engulfed by darkness in the new production Skone Oke: The Curious Toy Shop of Dr Coppelius. Based on the short story The Sandman by Ernst Hoffmann, the play has been devised by students on the MA Physical Theatre (International Ensemble) programme, who have created their own theatre company as part of the course. Audiences will be transported to a small village called Battenburg, where it is always light and residents go about their business in joyful, uninterrupted brightness. Surrounding Battenburg is a forest, home to Dr Coppelius the toymaker who avoided the town and its bright lights, preferring the dark and the company of his curious creations. Using physical theatre, the story tells the tale of the village, which is suddenly descended into darkness and the mysterious Dr Coppelius became the villagers only hope. The production is being performed at the Drama St Mary’s Theatre from Tuesday 10th until Thursday 12th December. Tickets cost £5 and are available to students, staff and members of the public.
