Research profile

Carolina Sciplino joined St Mary’s as a Lecturer in Psychology in 2008. She completed her PhD in Developmental Psychology from Goldsmiths University of London. Her thesis title was: “Representation and intergenerational perception of grandparenthood in three countries”. The thesis focused on the representation of grandparenthood and its social implications. Empirical work consisted of three individual studies. The first study examined grandparents’ depictions in children’s books in the UK, Italy and Greece. The second study investigated the perceptions of grandparents’ representations by different generations in the three countries. In the third study portrayals of grandparents on British television were analysed.

Carolina’s research areas of interest are intergenerational relationships within the family context, in particular the relationships between grandparents and grandchildren in different cultures; children’s identity development in multicultural families; representations of grandparents and older adults in different media, the effects of television and other media on children’s cognitive and social development.
