Biography

Syed Kamall was appointed Professor of Politics and International Relations in September 2019. He is a member of the House of Lords and sits on the Communications and Digital Committee. He is also Co-Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for the Commonwealth, and an Academic Fellow at the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA).

He has served as the Minister for Technology, Innovation and Life Sciences at the Department of Health and Social Care and the Minister for Civil Society, Heritage, Tourism and Growth at the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport.

From 2019 to 2021, Syed was the Academic and Research Director at the Institute of Economic Affairs, the UK’s leading classical liberal think tank and an education charity.

From 2005 to 2019, he was a Member of the European Parliament for London. In the European Parliament, he was leader of the European Conservatives and Reformists pan-EU political group of MEPs from 19 countries, and worked to promote open trade, tech start-ups and proportionate financial regulation. As the most senior elected British MEP, he acted as an interlocutor between UK and EU negotiators.

He formerly worked in IT and as a strategy, public affairs and diversity consultant. His previous academic research was in the area of international business, market entry and foreign direct investment (FDI), especially in transition economies.

In London, he regularly met and worked with local community projects tackling poverty and social exclusion. He is currently setting up a microfinance project to offer online grants to entrepreneurs from poorer communities. He is also in discussions to set up a local charities network to help inspire and incubate more local community charities.

In his rare moments of leisure, he spends time with his family and enjoys reading, travelling, cycling and playing cricket. He plays electric bass or guitar and sings in a blues band.

Syed teaches the Global Governance module of the MA in Diplomacy and International Relations. He has taught the International Organisations module of the BA (Hons) Politics and International Relations and the Social Justice From Theory to Practice module on the MA in Social Justice and Public Service He has also supervised BSc Business Management, BA (Hons) Politics and International Relations MA Diplomacy and International Relations and PhD dissertations.
